• Rossauer Kaserne



    The Rossauer Kaserne, also known as the Rossauer Barracks, is a historic military barracks located in the 9th district of Vienna, in the Alsergrund quarter. It currently serves as the headquarters of the Austrian Ministry of Defense.


    Originally named the Kronprinz-Rudolf-Kaserne after Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, it was constructed between 1865 and 1869 as part of a defensive strategy following the 1848 Revolution. The architecture of the barracks is designed in the style of romantic Historicism, with distinctive crenellated corner towers and balconies that were intended for use as gun platforms in case of an attack.


    In January 2020, the barracks were renamed the Bernardis-Schmid-Kaserne in honor of resistance fighters Robert Bernardis and Anton Schmid. The building is a significant example of 19th-century military architecture and has survived through various political and societal changes to this day.
